We're super excited we were able to catch up with Nathan of Third Realm about his upcoming album "Her Name Was Melancholia". It comes out on March 7th and you should definitely check it out! We loved it!
Q: Explain the title "Her Name Was Melancholia". Who is the person being referenced? How did you come up with this concept, and what story are you trying to tell?
A: The concept involves two people, the first being Isabella Bianchi, who goes by "Isabella Melancholia". She heavily influenced the name of the album and the songs often reference another person I used to know, who will remain nameless. Consistent themes throughout the album deal with the dark energy she once casted around me.
Q: How long have you been working on this album?
A: Off and on for about one year.
Q:Why did you decide to not release any singles, and just drop the whole album?
A: I think this time around, it was due to needing to do more work with promo and a couple of music videos. It gave me more time to ponder those ideas, instead of pressuring myself with the need to release singles and have promo content available sooner than I was able to put it together effectively.
Q: Did you have any difficulties, technical or otherwise, that delayed being able to release this album?
A: Nothing too technical, but I was originally considering features and/or remixes, but decided against them towards the completion of the album (no main reason for that, other than feeling it wasn't the right time or vibe for this album).
Q: Does the release date of March 7th have any specific meaning, or is it just convenient?
A: No special meaning, but it does fall on a "Bandcamp Friday", so that was appealing.
Q: How did you decide what order to put the tracks in?
A: That's always the fun part. I initially assemble a certain order using tracks I'm currently working on. Once the album nears completion, I just slide them in spots that make sense. This is probably the most concept based album I have done in awhile, so that played a part in making sure there was a story being told, rather than "hits" being higher up on the track listing.
Q: What made you decide to re-work your 2012 track "Diabolic Crush"?
A: I felt it was time to inject some modern production techniques into the song. Every instrument and vocal was redone, so it sounds more like how I currently perform it live.
Q: What does "Vade Retro Satana" mean? What inspired this track? This track feels very different from the rest of the album. Why?
A: It is a Latin phrase, which roughly translates to "Get Away (or get back), Satan". This was an important track to nail home the concept of rising above the dark energies that no longer have power over me. It was also meant to compliment the first track, "Eva's Eulogy"; it sort of picks up where that track leaves off, stylistically.
Q: Whose on the cover of the album?
A: Isabella Bianchi, who goes by "Isabella Melancholia" (also mentioned above as the main influence of the album title).
Q: Is there anything else you want to say about this album?
A: It was perhaps the first time I performed several songs from an album that was yet to be released. I generally used to keep everything locked up until release day. I found myself adding a lot of these songs to sets over the course of the past year or so.
Q: Do you have any shows booked for this year?
A: We just performed at "The Undead of Winter", presented by Reign of Terror Entertainment in Milton, PA last week. We're looking into booking shows in Philadelphia and Detroit soon. And to answer your actual question, we are booked for the next Mechanismus Festival in Seattle (May 27-31)
Q: If you were an ice cream, what flavor would you be?
A: Mint Chocolate Chip
