Motuvius Rex - Flowers For Dolores (Album Review)

Our friend Motuvius Rex just dropped his new "Flowers For Dolores" album, and it is so good! It's pretty simplistic and mellow, and really focuses in on a dark gothic folk type sound, which I absolutely love, and also features The Neuro Farm, The Kentucky Vampires, a remix, and a cover song. What else could you ask for? The harmony between Motuvius Rex and the gorgeous voice of Ashley Vega is just absolute perfection, and pairs beautifully with the instrumentals.

I especially love "Toil and Trouble", which is not only a little faster paced, but has a deeper tone to the guitar and has a really cool melody. It also has a great message of being weary of wasting away our lives working, when we could be showing love to our loved ones, which is a theme I think most of us can relate to, and it's handled so well.

The cover of Black's "Everythings Coming Up Roses" is phenomenal. This song fits the roses and flowers theme that's found throughout the album, and was a great choice to include, and I'm happy that Motuvius Rex had help from his bandmates in The Kentucky Vampires for this one. It really needed the extra oomph of drums, electric guitar, and vocals in order to do it justice. It also very successfully pays homage to the original, while taking it and making it a Motuvius Rex song. "Into Eternal Sleep" is a really, really interesting track. It starts out with some garbled spoken word and goes into a beautiful peaceful stringed instrumental piece. It's sort of a palette cleanser before returning to the folk sound, which is something I think every album can benefit from. Change it up a bit, give us a break in sound, give me something I've never heard before, and then finish off strong.

This album is just incredible, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely recommend giving it a listen, if you're looking for some quality goth folk, or if you need a soundtrack while writing cursed tomes and esoteric musings.
